Diet, diet, diet! It gets to be a constant battle for many of us to stay fit and healthy. But diets don’t always allow us to learn new eating habits, improve our self-image, or make lifestyle changes. Developing good eating habits and proper exercise is a permanent issue. And it’s the main topic of this workshop.
In order to keep a healthy diet and minimize the risk of disease, it’s essential to eat a diet that consists of low fat foods and to maximize energy with carbohydrates. Beef, nuts, oils, and most dairy products are rich in fat, so you should eat less of those; while pastry, rice, potatoes, and bread contain almost no fat and are a high energy source of complex carbohydrates. You know that many food manufactures use sugar to make low fat or fat-free foods taste good, but don’t worry too much about that. You don’t necessarily “get fat” by eating sugar, since sugar is an indirect fat.
When you exercise, carbohydrates are the first calories to burn, if you want to burn of fat, It’s good to do some sort of aerobic exercise such as biking, swimming, running, or fast walking. But you have to keep doing this exercise for at least twenty minutes because it takes about that long before we start to burn fat. And then the effect of burning fat decreases after forty-five minutes of exercise. So if you do some sort of aerobic exercise for three to four days a week for about thirty to forty minutes, you’ll have an effective schedule for reducing weight.

On November 19, 1863, Abraham Lincoln went to Gettysburg in Pennsylvania to speak at the National Soldiers Cemetery. The Civil War was still going on. There was much criticism of President Lincoln at the time. He was not at all popular. He had been invited to speak at Gettysburg only out of politeness. The principal speaker was to be Edward Everett, a famousstatesman and speaker of the day. Everett was a handsome man and very popular everywhere.
It is said that Lincoln prepared his speech on the train while going to Gettysburg. Late that night, alone in his hotel room and tired out, he again worked briefly on the speech. The next day Everett spoke first. He spoke for an hour and 57 minutes. His speech was a perfect example of the rich oratory of the day. Then Lincoln rose. The crowd of 15, 000 people at fist paid little attention to him. He spoke for only nine minutes. At the end there was little applause. Lincoln turned to a friend and said, “I have failed again.” On the train back to Washington, he said sadly, “That speech was a flat failure, and the people are disappointed.”
Some newspapers at first criticized the speech. But little by little as people read the speech they began to understand better. They began to appreciate its simplicity and its deep meaning. The Chinese have used a method called acupuncture to perform operations for about 4, 000 years without putting the patient to sleep. This involves placing flexible needles into certain parts the body. The needles are available in a number of stores in China and anyone may buy them.
To learn how to use the needles takes about one month of training. But to be skillful requires greater time. The person who performs the acupuncture knows how to put in the needles so the needles themselves are not painful. This person also knows where to place the needles so the patient feels no pain in the area where the operation is to be performed. A particular operation might require 25 or more needles placed in various parts of the body. But now this operation
requires only 3 or 4 needles.
Today, the Chinese doctors are trying to learn more about acupuncture. A patient who needs an operation is given a choice between having acupuncture or having one of the chemicals used for putting him to sleep. How we look and how we appear to others probably worry us more when we are in our teensor early twenties than at any other time in our life. Few of us are content to accept ourselves as we are, and few are brave enough to ignore the trends of fashion.
Most fashion magazines or TV advertisements try to persuade us that we should dress in a certain way or behave in a certain manner. If we do, they tell us, we will be able to meet new people with confidence and deal with every situation confidently and without embarrassment. Changing fashion, of course, does not apply just to dress. A barber today does not cut a boy’s hair in the same way as he used to, and girls do not make up in the same way as their mothers and grandmothers did. The advertisers show us the latest fashionable styles and we are constantly under pressure to follow the fashion in case our friends think we are odd or dull.
What causes fashions to change? Sometimes convenience or practical necessity or just the fancy of an influential person can establish a fashion. Take hats for example—in cold climates, early buildings were cold inside, so people wore hats indoors as well as outside. In recent times, President Kennedy caused a depression in the American hat industry by not wearing hats: more
American men followed his example. There is also a cyclical pattern in fashion. In the 1920s in Europe and America, short skirts became fashionable. After World WarⅡ, they dropped to ankle length. Then they got shorter and shorter and the miniskirt was in fashion. After a few more years, skirts became longer again.
Today, society is much freer and easier than it used to be. It is no longer necessary to dress like every-one else. Within reason, you can dress as you like or do your hair the way you like instead of the way you should because it is the fashion. The popularity of jeans and the “untidy” look seems to be a reaction against the increasingly expensive fashion of the top fashion houses.
52. What is true according to the passage?
A. People are satisfied with their appearance.
B. People are concerned about appearance in old age.
C. People are far from neglecting what is in fashion.
D. People are reluctant to follow the trends in fashion.
53. What do fashion magazines and TV advertisement link fashion to?
A. Confidence in life
B. Personal dress
C. Individual hair style
D. Personal future
54. What can be indicated about the causes of fashions?
A. Causes of fashions are uniform.
B. Causes of fashions are varied.
C. Causes of fashions are unknown.
D. Causes of fashions are inexplicable.
55. Why is present-day society said to be much freer and easier?
A. Because it emphasizes uniformity.
B. Because it emphasizes formality.
C. Because it emphasizes informality.
D. Because it emphasizes individual.

参考范文:
Good morning everyone,
I am Li Hua from Xinhua Middle School. The topic of my speech is“Let’s Ride Bicycles.” As is known to all, with the improvement of people’s living standards, cars have become a popular means of transport, bringing great convenience to our life. However, they have also caused some problems such as air pollution and traffic jams.
How can we solve the problems then? As far as I’m concerned, riding bicycles is a good solution. For one thing, bicycles don’t need any petrol and they are energy saving. For another, bicycles are environmentally friendly because they won’t give off waste gas. What’s more, riding bicycles is a good way for us to exercise and it is beneficial to our health.
Therefore, 1et’s take the responsibility to build up a low-carbon city by riding bicycles. Come on and join us!
Thank you.
