abandon,desert,forsake,give up

【abandon】指不顾责任、义务等离弃，遗弃，也指不得已而舍弃、丢弃、离开。

例句：Snow forced many drivers to abandon their vehicles.

大雪迫使许多驾驶者弃车步行。

【desert】指抛弃、离弃、遗忘某人，放弃某物。也指舍弃，离弃某地方（一般用被动语态）。

例句：He was pained to see many youngsters deserting farm life.

他痛心地看到许多年轻人放弃农村生活。

【forsake】尤指不履行责任而抛弃、遗弃、离开，也指摒弃、离开喜爱的事物。

例句：He had made it clear to his wife that he would never forsake her.

他明确地向妻子说，永远不离开她。

【give up】侧重指放弃，让出。

例句：Don’t give up until you have exhausted all the possibilities.
